Take action on yourself slowly. Do not remove caffeine off your diet immediately. Why? If you suddenly consume less caffeine than usual you are likely to suffer from “withdrawal” symptoms as the brain’s receptors become disorientated by the sudden removal of a powerful stimulus. The symptoms vary from person to person but include headaches, edginess and lethargy.
Ways to cut down
To cut down, reduce your caffeine intake gradually over a period of about two weeks so your body is not prompted to produce any withdrawal symptom. Try using a smaller measure of instant or ground coffee with the same amount of water. With tea, the longer it is left to brew the more caffeine it contains. Alternatively, stick to same strength, but replace every other cup with a herbal tea, fruit juice or plain water. If it is the taste that you miss then try the decaffeinated versions of coffee, tea and cola.
