Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent Fasting

Posted in Weight Loss

What is intermittent fasting (IF)?

Intermittent fasting (shortened as IF) is a pattern of eating for certain number of hours and then fast for certain number of hours. In short, IF is eat-stop-eat pattern.

Why IF works better than normal dieting?

We take our breakfast, lunch and dinner whether we are hungry or not. We tend to eat snacks and take soft drinks in between meals. Just before we go to bed, we would like a glass of milk or make ourselves a nice sandwich. We are eating all day long. No wonder it is difficult to fight off the weight.

When we talk about dieting, we expect LONG TERM hunger and suffering. When we plan to loose a few pounds, we expect a few months or even a year of hunger. Most of the time, we don’t know when we can stop dieting. It seems to be a life-long task. No wonder we resent dieting.

IF works better than dieting. The person only fast for a certain number of hours. He/she can look forward to the next time he/she can eat again. There is little or no resistance to this kind of plan. Another reason why IF works is that you can adjust your IF plan to suit your lifestyle.

Benefit of fasting

  • Mentally more alert.
  • Loose weight.
  • Build muscle mass : If you do a internet search, you will find pictures of people claiming weight loss and muscle growth using IF.
  • Age slower and live longer : Research suggests that animals age slower and live longer when they consume fewer calories in Wikipedia and New York Times.
  • Cleanse the digestive system.
  • Save the environment : Every piece of food we eat produce carbon footprint. The less we eat, the less carbon footprint we produce.

How to do intermittent fasting?

There are many ways to do IF. The way to start IF is to find a plan that suits your lifestyle. Below are some suggestions on how people do their IF. During the IF, you are allow to drink liquid intake like plain water and green tea as long as the liquid intake must not contain sugar. You can also drink Supergreens during the fasting.

  • Longer IF
    • Weekend fasting : You fast for 24 hours on your weekend. For example, you eat your dinner on Saturday night and start fasting until Sunday dinner time. Some people continue fasting till Monday breakfast time.
    • Twice a week : You can do a 24 hour fasting twice a week.
    • Use IF together with liquid diet
  • Short IF
    • Extend your usual fasting hours : You have been fasting everyday. You stop taking food after your dinner or supper and fast until the next day. That’s why your first meal of the day is is spelled as “break-fast“. You just have to lengthen this daily fasting period to maybe 18 hours before you starting eating normally.
    • 1 meal a day : Some people fast for 18 hours and allow eating during the next 3 hours and then fast for another 18 hours. That is about 1 meal per day.

While there is so much benefit in doing IF, there is still a chance of overeating after your fast. Fasting may not be suitable for people that have health concerns like blood sugar problems.

There is no failure in IF. You can start IF anytime and stop whenever you want. No more weight loss dieting.

Eat right fats to get rid of body fats

Posted in Weight Loss

Are you sure? YES!

Not all fats are bad guys. In fact, our body need fats to rebuild cells and able to neutralize the acid in our body. We cannot live without fats. Eating right fats will not only lower the cholesterol and blood pressure but also reduce the plaque in your arteries. Thus, the key point to make this diet work is to stay away from the bad fats and eat more good fats.

Trans Fat (known as Trans-Fatty Acids)

Avoid it at all cost!

Trans fats are man-made fats and are created by passing hydrogen through vegetable oil using a process called hydrogenation. They are also known as hydrogenated fats. You can also get trans fats by heating  polyunsaturated above 118 degrees Fahrenheit. Any oil that is not cold – pressed is going to have trans fats.

Trans fats are bad for health. They increase your cholesterol levels, impair circulation and increase the risk of many degenerative diseases and age-related maladies.

Saturated Fat

Consume in small quantity

You can get saturated fats from

  • animal sources like dairy, meat, poultry and eggs. You can also get
  • vegetable oil like coconut and palm oil

These saturated fats can fuel the body but they cannot buffer acids. Saturated fats tends to change to trans fats once they are heated up during food-processing and cooking.

Monounsaturated Fat

Best choice for cooking

Olive and avocados oil are monounsaturated fats. They are the best choice to be used in cooking because they can withstand heat above 118 degrees F .

Canola and peanut oil is also touted for being monounsaturated provided they are label as “cold-processed” oil. Once they are processed with heat, they will contain trans fat – fats that everyone should avoid.

Polyunsaturated Fats

Polyunsaturated Fats should make up 20 to 40 percent of your caloric intake. They are best fuel for your body to generate energy and help to lower cholesterol levels as they buffer acids in your body. The more acid that is buffered, the less fats you grow. Some examples are Omega-3 and Omega-6.

Summary Table

How can I reduce caffeine intake? What can I take in to improve my mental and physical state?

Posted in Fatigue, Video, Weight Loss

Take action on yourself slowly. Do not remove caffeine off your diet immediately. Why? If you suddenly consume less caffeine than usual you are likely to suffer from “withdrawal” symptoms as the brain’s receptors become disorientated by the sudden removal of a powerful stimulus. The symptoms vary from person to person but include headaches, edginess and lethargy.

Ways to cut down

To cut down, reduce your caffeine intake gradually over a period of about two weeks so your body is not prompted to produce any withdrawal symptom. Try using a smaller measure of instant or ground coffee with the same amount of water. With tea, the longer it is left to brew the more caffeine it contains. Alternatively, stick to same strength, but replace every other cup with a herbal tea, fruit juice or plain water. If it is the taste that you miss then try the decaffeinated versions of coffee, tea and cola.

Suggested Supplements to be taken

  • SuperSoy Powder – To help combat stress, the body ward off infection, to inhibit cancer-promoting enzymes.
  • Caps Adrenal Plus – This formulation helps the adrenal glands overcome the inhibiting factors of stress and perform at their peak level.
  • Fenugreek – To improve your physical body state.

Note: Before purchase any of these supplements, it is best to consult your doctor if you have any existing health problems.
